Padres acquire #CraigKimbrel, Melvin Upton Jr. from Braves
The San Diego Padres have acquired relief pitcher Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. (previously B.J. Upton) from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for outfielder Carlos Quentin, outfielder Cameron Maybin, pitcher Matt Wisler, outfielder Jordan Paroubeck and the 2015 competitive balance pick No. 41, the teams announced Sunday.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal first reported the terms of the trade.
The trade, which comes on the eve of Opening Day 2015, reunites Upton with his brother Justin Upton, who was dealt from Atlanta to San Diego in December.
Kimbrel, 26, has made four consecutive All-Star games. He finished
last season with 47 saves, his fourth straight year with at least 40
saves.
Upton played for the Braves each of the last two seasons after spending the first eight years of his career with the Rays. Upton batted .208 last season, the second-lowest average of his career.
The Padres have been busy this off-season. Besides acquiring Kimbrel and the Upton brothers, San Diego also notably signed pitcher James Shields and traded for outfielder Matt Kemp.
In return for Kimbrel and Upton, the rebuilding Braves received two
major leaguers and two prospects in addition to the 41st pick.
Quentin, who has played for the Padres the last three seasons, only
played in 50 games last season. Quentin has dealt with a number of
injury issues since he arrived in San Diego and has not played more than
86 games in a season since 2011, his last year with the White Sox. He hit just .177 in 2014.
The Braves plan to designate Quentin for assignment, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.
Maybin,
who was the Tigers' first-round pick in 2005, was sent to the Marlins
ahead of the 2008 season as part of the Miguel Cabrera trade. He played
three seasons in Florida before joining the Padres, with whom he played
the last four years. Maybin batted .235 last season in 95 games.
Wisler,
22, played with Double A San Antonio and Triple A El Paso in 2014.
Paroubeck, 20, made his professional debut with the Arizona League
Padres last season.
